Is FreeCAD hard to learn?
FreeCAD has many tools and unfamiliar names. Start with one small design. With CADWiz, you can ask your desktop assistant to explain each step while you work on an editable FreeCAD model.
Editing STL files
How do I edit or remix an STL file?
An STL file is a triangle mesh, not a normal editable CAD model. FreeCAD can import it, inspect it, and sometimes convert or repair it. Simple cuts may work, but major changes often need mesh tools or a rebuilt parametric model. Keep the original file and check the repaired shape before manufacturing.

What is a FreeCAD addon or workbench?
A workbench groups tools for one kind of job. An add-on adds tools to FreeCAD. CADWiz is available now: install it through Addon Manager using the custom repository instructions on the download page.
Designing for 3D printing
Do I need to know CAD to design 3D prints?
No, but some CAD knowledge helps you check the result. You need accurate sizes, enough wall thickness, and a shape that can be manufactured safely. CADWiz aims to guide beginners while keeping the result editable in FreeCAD. Printing and physical validation remain separate steps.

Do I need FreeCAD to use CADWiz?
Yes. Install FreeCAD 1.1 or newer, then install CADWiz inside it. The download page shows the desktop assistant choices and installation steps. Windows has isolated-install checks; Mac support is early and has not had a real-device installation test.
What is CADWiz?
CADWiz is your smart CAD buddy inside FreeCAD. Talk through Claude Desktop or ChatGPT with Codex to inspect, measure, build and edit models. The panel lets you mark the model, keep versions and check parts for printing. Physical print testing remains your own step.
Is CADWiz free?
CADWiz is not publicly obtainable today. The website currently offers a beta application â an October FreeCAD group, a November Blender group, or both â not a downloadable product or a paid plan. CADWiz Tier 1 runs free and on your own computer. Beta testing needs your own API credits from OpenAI or Anthropic.
Does CADWiz work offline?
FreeCAD, the CADWiz bridge and its bundled helper run locally. After downloading CADWiz, helper setup needs no package downloads. Your desktop assistant still needs its own service connection; this is not a promise of offline AI chat.
